Beyond Speculation: Bridging Ethereum with Societal Trust Systems
thereum is often perceived primarily as a speculative tool. Yet its true potential lies in becoming the coordination layer for public goods and everyday life. This talk explores how Ethereum can move beyond speculation by integrating with societal trust systems — national-scale digital identity infrastructures that provide reliable verification and inclusivity. The mainstream narrative around Ethereum has long been dominated by trading, speculation, and volatility. But Ethereum’s original vision — to serve as a foundation for human coordination and public goods — is far more ambitious. To realize this vision, we need to bridge Ethereum’s trustless protocols with the trusted societal infrastructures that billions of people already depend on.
This session presents a perspective from Japan, where a nationwide digital ID card is issued to every citizen. By linking such societal trust systems with Ethereum, we can lower onboarding friction, expand stablecoin adoption, and enable real-world applications:
- Public goods distribution: delivering benefits and subsidies directly, instantly, and transparently.
- Everyday usability: touch-to-pay experiences backed by stablecoins, rather than volatile assets.
- Mass adoption: providing a secure, regulated entry point for millions who currently see crypto as only speculative.
By combining Ethereum’s global neutrality with local trust anchors, we can move toward an ecosystem where speculation is no longer the primary story — instead, Ethereum becomes the invisible infrastructure for social and economic coordination.
