Bridging East and West: Stories from the Early Days of Ethereum and Asia’s Support
2025-09-12 , Ethreactor Stage
Language: English

This session will focus on the Asian community’s (including China and Japan) contribution to Ethereum’s early growth, reflecting on how Vitalik and Dan visited Japan around 2016, interacted with financial institutions, and engaged with the local blockchain community.
The discussion will highlight Asia’s role in bridging East and West and share perspectives on the future of global collaboration.

In this session , Andy Dan of Fenbushi Japan will sit down with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin to reflect on the essential role the Asian community played in Ethereum’s growth.
The conversation will begin with stories from Vitalik’s 2016 visit to Japan—sharing little-known, memorable moments—and explore how communities in China and Japan offered unique forms of support, from in-depth technical discussions to rigorous commercial exploration, each contributing vitally to Ethereum’s early development.
The session will then dive into technical themes, including Ethereum’s goal to expand its capacity tenfold over the next year and key upgrades like Pectra and EIP-7702 (Account Abstraction) . They will discuss how developers in Asia—with their deep experience in mobile internet ecosystems—can take a leading role in these efforts and build the next generation of “Web3 super-apps” capable of onboarding billions of users.
Finally, they’ll look ahead to the next decade: Vitalik will share his insights and advice for builders in Asia, and discuss uncharted opportunities for East-West collaboration in technology, culture, and governance—painting a new vision of global cooperation.
This is both a retrospective of Ethereum’s journey and a forward-looking discussion—meant to pay tribute to the past and inspire the future.

Vitalik Buterin is the creator of Ethereum. After discovering blockchain technology and exploring its potential in 2011, he co-founded Bitcoin Magazine. In 2013, Vitalik wrote the Ethereum whitepaper, outlining a vision of a generalized framework for hosting decentralized applications and contracts. Today, he serves as a board member and continues his work as a researcher with the Ethereum Foundation.
