David Casey is the director of Funding the Commons, a global initiative initially incubated from within Protocol Labs, that convenes builders, funders, and researchers to accelerate public goods funding infrastructure and mechanisms. It does this through conferences, builder residencies, and hackathons.

This session will explore the evolving landscape of public goods in Web3, connecting insights from deep-tech research, decentralized science (DeSci), and philanthropy. Speakers will examine how public goods are created and distributed, why they matter for Ethereum and human civilization, and whether Ethereum’s unique approach to funding them provides a lasting advantage.
RealFi - Exploring how Ethereum can more effectively engage with real-world contexts: what is required, what remains absent, and the strategies that may enable broader adoption. I will reflect on the progress of the Ethereum ecosystem over the past decade, consider the structural gaps that still exist, and share how Funding the Commons is approaching these challenges. Finally, I will situate this in my own trajectory, beginning with early work in 2013 building merchant off-ramps for bitcoin, whi
