Theme for 2025: Liberating Technologies for the Future of Humanity
Liberation begins in the heart. Let us rethink from the ground up how technology can empower people, preserve cultures, and build a sustainable future in ways that are impossible today. The goal is not innovation for its own sake, but to reimagine and redefine the constraints of our constructed realities, envisioning new methods and better approaches to how we live and create.

Our Roadmap to Practical iO

Indistinguishability obfuscation (iO) has been seen as the "holy grail" of cryptography, turning a program into an “unintelligible” one that hides its internal secrets while preserving its functionality. However, it remains far from practical due to the high complexity and inefficiency of existing constructions.

To bring iO from theory to practice, our project, Machina iO, has proposed a new lattice-based iO construction, Diamond iO, and has released its partial implementation. In this talk, we will share current benchmarks and remaining challenges for the construction and its implementation, along with our roadmap for addressing them. In the long term, we believe that combining Ethereum with iO can make privacy scalable—that is, maintain strong privacy guarantees even as the volume and value of private data grow—thereby unlocking entirely new segments of users for the Ethereum ecosystem.

Crypto for AI Safety: Verifying “Is”, not deciding “Ought”

What does it mean for AI to be “safe”? Philosophy has wrestled with the problem of defining what is good or just for thousands of years, and cryptography cannot resolve that normative debate. But while it cannot decide ought, cryptography can help us establish reliable evidence about what AI systems did.

This talk explores how formal verification and cryptographic proofs can contribute to AI safety and interpretability. Formal verification can encode invariants and check that safety-critical guardrails or filters behave as specified. Zero-knowledge proofs and verifiable computation can ensure that an AI used the approved model version, applied required safety checks, and followed specified constraints—without exposing private data or proprietary model weights. Proof-carrying execution, enabled by recursive proofs, extends these guarantees to multi-step agents, letting us audit entire chains of reasoning or action.

The result is a “cryptographic safety wrapper”: a verifiable layer around AI systems that does not define moral truth, but that can make safety claims falsifiable, enforceable, and auditable. Drawing on Terence Tao’s ideas on machine-assisted proof, the talk argues that while philosophy continues to grapple with values, cryptography offers us a way to build shared ground truth about AI behavior—bridging the gap between ethics and engineering.

The mainstream narrative around Ethereum has long been dominated by trading, speculation, and volatility. But Ethereum’s original vision — to serve as a foundation for human coordination and public goods — is far more ambitious. To realize this vision, we need to bridge Ethereum’s trustless protocols with the trusted societal infrastructures that billions of people already depend on.

This session presents a perspective from Japan, where a nationwide digital ID card is issued to every citizen. By linking such societal trust systems with Ethereum, we can lower onboarding friction, expand stablecoin adoption, and enable real-world applications:

* Public goods distribution: delivering benefits and subsidies directly, instantly, and transparently.
* Everyday usability: touch-to-pay experiences backed by stablecoins, rather than volatile assets.
* Mass adoption: providing a secure, regulated entry point for millions who currently see crypto as only speculative.

By combining Ethereum’s global neutrality with local trust anchors, we can move toward an ecosystem where speculation is no longer the primary story — instead, Ethereum becomes the invisible infrastructure for social and economic coordination.

Chunk Your Code, Cut the Cost: EIP‑2926 Explained

In this session, we dive into EIP‑2926’s chunk-based code merkleization, a transformative upgrade for Ethereum’s contract execution model. Instead of bundling full bytecode verification, EIP‑2926 breaks smart contracts into fixed-size chunks, commits them in a Merkle Patricia Trie, and stores a compact codeRoot in the contract account.

Attendees will discover:
	•	Why this matters: Bytecode is currently one of the largest contributors to witness size. By introducing code chunking, Ethereum moves toward drastically leaner proofs suited for stateless clients and ZKEVM provers.
	•	How it works: Learn about the fixed-size chunking strategy (typically 31 bytes), the use of first-instruction offsets (FIO), and the Merkleization mechanics that support efficient and provable code access.
	•	Operational transition: The proposal details an upgrade path—including hard fork migration strategies—so that legacy contracts are incrementally converted without disruption.
	•	Performance gains and trade-offs: We’ll unpack how only executed chunks need to be loaded, dramatically cutting down on bandwidth and proof size.
	•	Current status: Recently revived into the Glamsterdam workflow in mid‑2025, EIP‑2926 is gaining traction as essential infrastructure for future ZKEVM compatibility.

Why Ethereum Needs a Collective of Incubators

Ethereum’s growth has long depended on local communities, hackathons, and independent incubators. But these efforts are often fragmented, with limited collaboration across regions and domains. This panel brings together the founders of Ethreactor to discuss why Ethereum now needs a collective incubator DAO—a global network where incubators unite, share resources, and coordinate action. Together, we will explore how this model can amplify impact, create shared value, and ensure Ethereum’s future is built by the ecosystem itself, not just by single organizations.

Scaling Ethereum by Block-Level Access List and EVM Compiler with Experiments on Geth

The EVM’s current quadratic memory pricing limits smart contracts to about 3MB of usable memory per transaction, making it hard to support data-heavy use cases. In this talk, we introduce EIP-7923, which proposes a sparse-page-based memory model with linearized gas costs. This enables up to 64MB of memory per transaction and introduces modern memory features more in line with conventional computing systems.

We’ll walk through the virtual memory design based on POSIX mmap, show how memory pages are lazily allocated, and demonstrate gas cost benchmarks based on real hardware. The new model enables advanced applications such as AI inference, high-throughput simulations, or large Merkle trees—while preserving security through a conservative 64MB cap and safe concurrent eth_call handling. This upgrade modernizes the EVM and expands its capability without compromising network stability.

Ethereum’s AKIRA Moment: Building Lasting Onchain Culture

What does it take for Ethereum to have its AKIRA moment? Jack, co-founder of Shinsei Galverse, draws on four years of making anime onchain to show why culture is Ethereum’s soft power.

The story begins with the NFT era: a time of broken incentives, but also the moment when designers, artists, marketers, and storytellers entered the ecosystem, and began to build the foundations of Ethereum's future messaging and influence.

Jack explores what's required to continue growing the cultural capital of Ethereum: viable models and careers, ways to build and distribute audiences, keeping Ethereum as a creative frontier. He looks at exemplars, including Galverse - that grew from a million-dollar mint to Shibuya billboards, streaming services, and Nike/Levi’s collabs, proving what's possible when new IP emerges onchain.

Looking forward, the talk explores the next wave: tokenized culture beyond NFTs, short-term capsule experiments, creative collectives, and brand / IP tokens. What's the ultimate form we can look forward to? What is the AKIRA moment for Ethereum?

The call to action: support creators, contribute to culture, and help build the conditions for Ethereum’s AKIRA moment to secure its future as a cultural and technological force.

By breaking up the entire scientific process into a composable stack of various scientific protocols that allow science and scientific DAOs to collaborate freely, we might achieve true open science. In my talk Id like to explore what this idea would look like and discuss how we might get there.

RealFi - Exploring how Ethereum can more effectively engage with real-world contexts: what is required, what remains absent, and the strategies that may enable broader adoption. I will reflect on the progress of the Ethereum ecosystem over the past decade, consider the structural gaps that still exist, and share how Funding the Commons is approaching these challenges. Finally, I will situate this in my own trajectory, beginning with early work in 2013 building merchant off-ramps for bitcoin, which first drew me into questions of accessibility and practical use cases for decentralized technologies.

d/acc the Swiss Way: Building Physical Hubs to Grow the d/acc Idea Machine

Allocating capital is how the world decides what matters. d/acc offers principles for what deserves support — but how do we build the funding engine around it? Our hypothesis: physical hubs can act as legitimacy concentrators in ways online systems can’t, anchoring sustainable funding for open-source and d/acc builders.

Zuitzerland is our prototype: a physical hub for d/acc tech, an accelerator for open source, and a permanent web3-enabled village in Switzerland. It tests how:

legitimacy can be staked through lived interaction,
hubs can function as credibility-driven engines of capital formation,
network effects similar to those of Silicon Valley can be bootstrapped in new contexts.

Bridging East and West: Stories from the Early Days of Ethereum and Asia’s Support

In this session , Andy Dan of Fenbushi Japan will sit down with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin to reflect on the essential role the Asian community played in Ethereum’s growth.
The conversation will begin with stories from Vitalik’s 2016 visit to Japan—sharing little-known, memorable moments—and explore how communities in China and Japan offered unique forms of support, from in-depth technical discussions to rigorous commercial exploration, each contributing vitally to Ethereum’s early development.
The session will then dive into technical themes, including Ethereum’s goal to expand its capacity tenfold over the next year and key upgrades like Pectra and EIP-7702 (Account Abstraction) . They will discuss how developers in Asia—with their deep experience in mobile internet ecosystems—can take a leading role in these efforts and build the next generation of “Web3 super-apps” capable of onboarding billions of users.
Finally, they’ll look ahead to the next decade: Vitalik will share his insights and advice for builders in Asia, and discuss uncharted opportunities for East-West collaboration in technology, culture, and governance—painting a new vision of global cooperation.
This is both a retrospective of Ethereum’s journey and a forward-looking discussion—meant to pay tribute to the past and inspire the future.

Why Individual Validators Matter: Building Resilience and the Path Ahead

There are currently around 1.12 million validators on Ethereum, most of which are concentrated in Europe and the US, and operated by large-scare node operators (Staking Service Providers).
At the same time, the technical and financial barriers to spinning up / running a validator have been steadily decreasing year by year, thanks to better documentations, dedicated setup tools, and ongoing efforts at the protocol level.

Against this backdrop, this session will bring together protocol contributors, researchers, and hardware specialists to discuss the importance of individual validators (solo stakers) and the future of solo staking.
